SJU student abducted in Jaffna

A Tamil Management faculty student of Sri Jayawardenapura University has been abducted allegedly by the LTTE in Jaffna when the student refused to comply with an LTTE order, military sources said.

They said the student identified as 27-year-old S. Ramachandran, was residing at Wellawatte. He had reportedly gone to his native place at Nallur in Jaffna where suspected LTTE cadres ordered him to carry out a task. The student had then been captured on Sunday near the Nallur Kachcheri.

The parents of the abducted student had gone to the Nallur LTTE political office and demanded his release but the LTTE cadres there had denied involvement in the disappearance of the student.
Later the parents lodged a complaint with the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission.

The abducted victim had been residing in Wellawatte after he was selected for admission to the Jayawardenapura University. The CID said the student may have been abducted because of his failure to abide by an LTTE directive.

Meanwhile Sri Jayewardenapura University Vice Chancellor Professor Chandima Wijebandara requested the LTTE leadership to release the student without harming him.

“In this matter, we cannot interfere except requesting the LTTE to release the student”, he said.
