Tiger demonstration turns violent

[10th Tuesday]
@ LT

A Wanni Tiger led demonstration was held at Chanthiveli, Eravur in Batticaloa yesterday demanding the withdrawal of the newly set up road block there. This road block was laid there following a decision made at a meeting between the SLMM and the security forces to curb rival killings heightened at an alarming rate in the Eastern Province.

At about 10.45 AM the demonstrators began to throw stones at the security forces and turned violent in an obvious attempt to provoke the security personnel and make them retaliate. The vehicle of the 12 Artillery Commander, Major Hemantha was hit resulting its windows being shattered. The forces then fired tear gas and fired shots at the sky to disperse the crowds. A Tiger supporter, one Mr. Kandasamy, was killed and one Army officer, Police sub inspector Chandrapala, two police constables, 5 soldiers and two civilians were wounded in the incident. The wounded were admitted to Batticaloa hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile in another incident at Kahapilima Junction at Sinthandi the Tigers have thrown two hand grenades and fired 10-15 shots with a T56 rifle at the Army picket point on Batticaloa-Polonnaruwa main supply route at about 9.45 PM last night. About four Tigers were on the attack and two soldiers have been wounded. They were rushed to Polonnaruwa hospital for treatment.

The Wanni Tigers have announced a hartal in Batticaloa for tomorrow.

The Army Intelligence have received information that Tigers will stage this type of demonstrations in the future and use people as a human shield in a tacit move to win back the sympathy of the people that has weaned drastically in the past.
