COLOMBO - Suspected Tamil Tiger rebels ambushed an army bus with a Claymore mine at Serunuwara in the east late on Monday, and 18 soldiers are killed in the blast, the military said.

LTTE on Monday (31) late night about 10.30 p.m. blasted the army bus that was carrying troops at Serunuwara on Kantalai – Serunuwara road killing 18 soldiers on the spot and injuring one.

This retaliatory LTTE attack came hours after troops in an attempt to reopen the sluice gate at Mavil Aru, Trincomalee closed in on the anicut with the support of air cover provided by the air force.

Troops in the ill-fated bus were proceeding towards Kantalai in ordered to release some of the soldiers who are scheduled to go on leave.

Additional troops rushed to the scene of the claymore blast and cordoned the area.

The attack in the eastern district of Trincomalee is the latest in a series of attacks and clashes that have killed more than 800 people so far this year, and comes just hours after the Tigers warned a 2002 ceasefire is void and accused the government of resuming a two-decade civil war.
