Eight kovil youth killed in Jaffna : Hartal called

08MAY2006 / @ DM

Jaffna civilian based organizations have declared an indefinite work stoppage following the abduction and killing of eight youth employed at the Kelathu Amman kovil in Jaffna on Saturday night. The civil orgnisations have blamed the deaths on the government forces and are calling for an immediate end to extrajudicial killings and harassment of civilians.

The eight youth were sleeping overnight at the temple in Chavakachcheri, Jaffna when unknown gunmen abducted them. Blood stains were found on the temple surroundings while the identity cards of the missing youth and the clothes of some of them were also recovered from the area. Civil organisations in Jaffna allege the armed forces had been carrying out extrajudicial killings on a daily basis for the past several weeks, the latest which they allege was the killing of youth at the Chavakachcheri temple.

Meanwhile the Jaffna students union has called on students to boycott classes in support of the work stoppage in Jaffna. The government has refuted claims certain elements within the security forces were involved in extra judicial killings and even protested when the SLMM noted such killings were taking place.
