Holland House of Hope a haven for tsunami-affected children

The Island / 15APR2005
(From S. K. J. Kurera, Pamungama Corr.)

Somawathie Home at present known as "Holland House of Hope" initiated by Ms. Marja J. Van Leeuwen of Netherlands assisted by Ms. Marjolein Meerburgh and a team of Dutch volunteers, situated at Harumangoda, in Habaraduwa off famous Koggala beach has become a real paradise on earth for the parentless children effected by tsunami in this down south.

Owner of this spacious building Mr. Saparamadu, son-in-law of the famous writer and popular novelist the late Martin Wickremasinghe has been so kind and sympathetic to change his mind and donate this building - which be planned earlier to set apart for aged destitutes - for the use of parentless children effected by tsunami in response to a suggestion by chief of the Dutch volunteers Ms. Marja J. Van Leeven.

Mr. Saparamadu had put up this building on a five acre land in memory of his parents the late Somawathie Saparamadu and Charles Saparamadu and son Ananda Kumaradasa several years ago.

At present many facilities including food, lodging, sports, medical, education have been provided for forty (40) children and more children will be admitted once renovations of other buildings are over.

These Dutch volunteers who could be called "Good Sameritans", hope to set up an English language centre and a vocational training centre after expanding this project later.

A large stock of sports items beds, matress and many other domestic items imported for the exclusive use of orphans have been stored up in an abandoned building due to lack of accommodation.

Registration of orphans for this House of Hope took place in the presence of Mrs. Iranganie Amarasiri, Probation Commission of Southern Province, Mr. and Mrs. Saparamadu and the Dutch volunteers.
