Ex-chancellor Kohl to fund hospital

Former German chancellor Helmut Kohl, who was holidaying in Sri Lanka during the tsunami and had to be evacuated by helicopter, is to fund reconstruction of the damaged Mahamodara hospital in southern Galle, newspapers said. Kohl and his friends have raised $35m to repair the hospital, Mano Tittawella, chairman of the Task Force for Rebuilding the Nation (Tafren), was quoted as saying. The ex-chancellor had watched the tsunami waves roll from the balcony of his third storey hotel room in Thalpe, Galle. Shortly after his rescue, the 74-year-old Kohl pledged to stay on in Sri Lanka and help organise relief for children, the Island reported. Meanwhile, former US president Bill Clinton is again expected in the island for a high-level meeting of donors, said Finance Minister Sarath Amunugama. The Sri Lanka Development Forum is scheduled to take place in Kandy from May 15 to 17.
