Jumbos break electric fence

@ By Sunil Rajapakse / DM

Wild elephants have damaged the Electric Fence in Pallekele Sanctuary and are now rampaging the surrounding villages. A tusker in the herd is said to have pulled out the concrete fence-posts after loosening them with its tusks.

The wild elephants that roam into human habitats through the broken fence have destroyed crops in Korakahakolla, Moragolla, and Aluthwewa areas. The residents in the area said that the Department of Wildlife Conservation had not yet taken any steps to restore the fence despite their numerous complaints. They said that their efforts to protect and maintain the Electric Fence that cost about Rs.10 million had been in vain due to the damages caused by the tusker.

R.C. Sirisena a resident of Korakahakolla said, " My house is near the fence. I have seen the tusker that comes to the reservoir at night. It breaks open the fence and let the herd enter the village. Members of Social Organizations in the vilsslage often do makeshift repairs to the fence but of no avail."
