Dateline Colombo: Dam crack raises alarm

A major dam in Sri Lanka’s central region has developed a crack raising alarm bells. The Daily Mirror said the Kotmale reservoir’s main dam shows a horizontal cleft that has been patched up with a cement concrete mixture but it has served little or no purpose. The paper quoted informed sources as saying at present only 1/3 of the reservoir is filled, as the endangered dam cannot hold water to its full capacity. This has resulted in switching off two of the three turbines generating power. The dam is 285 ft (85 metres) in height and 1,969 feet (600 metres) in width and is one of the biggest under the accelerated Mahaweli dam and reservoir project launched in the early 1980s to improve irrigation and agriculture production.
