A Sri Lankan farmer has pleaded guilty to killing a wild elephant by
electrocuting him and was fined Rs. 100,000 and warned he would be jailed for two years if he failed to pay the fine, the Daily Mirror reported.

It said Uyange Martin Singho told Kekirawa Magistrate Nimal Ranaweera he could pay only Rs. 25,000 and requested time to pay the balance.

The magistrate gave him time till May 5 to pay the fine.

The wild elephant had been electrocuted on January 29 in a plot of land owned by Martin Singho. Veterinary surgeon Dr Chandana Jayasinghe who conducted the post mortem returned a verdict of death due to electrocution.
