Juicy Fruits: Mangosteens
Avocado - The most nutritious fruit ( Although the fruit is called a pear, it is really a berry.)
Aligata Pera - Avocado (Introduced by the Portuguese to Sri Lanka, the Sinhalese call it Aligata Pera, echoing its name of Aligator Pear in the USA. It is also known as butter fruit, butter pear and laurel peach.)
Beli ( Beli (Aegle marmelos) is known in English as bael fruit and in Sanskrit as bilva. Beli increases appetite and reduces fever. )
Beli ( Ayurvedic literature advises the planting of a belli tree or trees in the home garden. The leaves are so rich in chlorophyll they absorb foul gases, and enrich the air you breathe. )
Puhul - White gourd melon (Benincasa hispida) ( puhul is classified a fruit but also treated as a vegetable in Sri Lanka, increases sperm and treats disorders. )

- Karapincha - The curry leaf ( Most Ayurveda physicians suggest that anyone who has garden space grows a karapincha (Murraya koenigii) tree because, then, the doctor is always home. Karapincha– is effective treatment for hypertension and high cholesterol.)
- kottamalli - Coriander ( Coriander, or kottamalli, is identified botanically as Coriandrum sativum. According to the Ayurvedic Institute in New Mexico, USA, coriander has useful pharmacological actions. It is digestive, an appetiser, stomachic, antipruritic, anti-inflammatory, diuretic antipyretic. )
- kaha - Turmeric ( The herb enhances skin colour, heals ulcers and purifies the blood. It is therefore used in treatment of blood disorders, skin rashes and itching. )
- Gotu kola - Centella asiatica ( The herb contains Vitamins A, G, and K and is also high in magnesium, helps the nervous system and increase brain power. )
- Fenugreek (Uluhal) - purifies menstrual blood in women ( The seeds and paste of leaves are beneficial in treatment of oedema and burning sensation. Fenugreek gives a good motion and reduces pain and constipation. It is a good laxative and is also used to treat loss of appetite, indigestion, worm infestation and piles. It purifies the blood, stimulates blood circulation, is an expectorant and reduces phlegm.)

- Herbal Medicines ( One of the commonest herbs with an array of medicinal uses is 'Welpenela' (Cardiospermum halicacabumof). This small and delicate wiry climber can be used to treat piles, rheumatism, nervous disorders and chronic bronchitis. Its power lies mostly in its leaves which can also be used as a poultice for skin diseases. A paste of the leaves is a dressing for sores and wounds. Crushed leaves can also be inhaled to relieve headaches and the seeds used to relieve fever and body aches.)
